The Market Theatre has a heartfelt treat lined up for the month of love! ‘n Begin, an intimate Afrikaans play, takes the stage to explore the fragile, messy, and beautiful beginnings of romance. Running for a limited season, this two-hander, adapted from David Eldridge’s acclaimed original work, translated into Afrikaans by Nico Scheepers and directed by the award-winning Tinarie van Wyk-Loots, promises a moving exploration of vulnerability, connection, and desire.

‘n Begin is set in the quiet aftermath of a housewarming party. The story revolves around Laura and Daniel, two souls navigating the uncertain terrain of a potential relationship. As the early morning hours tick by, Laura’s bold pursuit of Daniel clashes with his insecurities, creating a compelling dynamic that keeps audiences guessing: will they take the leap of faith or retreat into their comfort zones?

Director Tinarie van Wyk-Loots assures audiences of a captivating and emotional experience, calling the play a thrilling exploration of modern relationships’ complexities. She praises the exceptional performances of award-winning actors Cintaine Schutte (Laura) and Carel Nel (Daniel), whose portrayals authentically capture the messiness of starting a new relationship. “Directing this play by David Eldridge, who is one of the most talented playwrights of his time, is an incredible privilege,” Van Wyk-Loots says. “The chemistry between the cast is contagious and real, giving an authentic exploration of what modern relationships often look like.”

The Market Theatre Foundation’s Artistic Director, Greg Homann, highlights the play as a chance to witness two exceptional performers bringing the ordinary to life in a compelling and engaging way. “We’re excited to stage this brilliant piece of contemporary playwriting, which the talented team behind it has now placed so well in a recognizable South African context”

Homann added, “As human beings, we have our ideas of love and relate to it in our own unique ways, and ‘n Begin is that kind of production that invites us to evaluate how we negotiate love, with all our baggage in tow”.

As a special touch for the “Month of Love,” The Market Theatre is offering Valentine’s Day specials for the February 14th performance. With its limited three-week run, ‘n Begin invites audiences to reflect on their own romantic journeys, making it the perfect outing for couples and theatre enthusiasts alike.

‘n Begin, an intimate Afrikaans Play will run from January 30th to February 16th at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg. The production is presented by The Market Theatre Foundation in association with the Stellenbosch Woordfees, supported by NATi.
