The Market Theatre has a heartfelt treat lined up for the month of love! ‘n Begin, an intimate Afrikaans play, takes the stage to explore the fragile, messy, and beautiful beginnings of romance. Running for a limited season, this two-hander, adapted from David Eldridge’s acclaimed original work, translated into Afrikaans by Nico Scheepers and directed by the award-winning Tinarie van Wyk-Loots, promises a moving exploration of vulnerability, connection, and desire.
‘n Begin is set in the quiet aftermath of a housewarming party. The story revolves around Laura and Daniel, two souls navigating the uncertain terrain of a potential relationship. As the early morning hours tick by, Laura’s bold pursuit of Daniel clashes with his insecurities, creating a compelling dynamic that keeps audiences guessing: will they take the leap of faith or retreat into their comfort zones?

Director Tinarie van Wyk-Loots assures audiences of a captivating and emotional experience, calling the play a thrilling exploration of modern relationships’ complexities. She praises the exceptional performances of award-winning actors Cintaine Schutte (Laura) and Carel Nel (Daniel), whose portrayals authentically capture the messiness of starting a new relationship. “Directing this play by David Eldridge, who is one of the most talented playwrights of his time, is an incredible privilege,” Van Wyk-Loots says. “The chemistry between the cast is contagious and real, giving an authentic exploration of what modern relationships often look like.”

As a special touch for the “Month of Love,” The Market Theatre is offering Valentine’s Day specials for the February 14th performance. With its limited three-week run, ‘n Begin invites audiences to reflect on their own romantic journeys, making it the perfect outing for couples and theatre enthusiasts alike.
