Mwezi Arts launches the inaugural Theatre Renaissance Cabaret (TRC), a new groundbreaking international festival set to reshape the theatrical landscape in Malawi. Scheduled for July 21st to 27th, 2025 in Lilongwe, the festival will bring together theatre practitioners from across the globe, offering a vibrant platform for storytelling, artistic exchange, and audience engagement.
Theatre Renaissance Cabaret marks a milestone for Mwezi Arts, aligning with its 25th anniversary and fulfilling a long-held vision to establish a dedicated theatre festival. Founded in 2000 by Malawian director and actor Stanley Malizani Mambo, Mwezi Arts has been a driving force in producing, developing, and advocating for the arts in Malawi and Southern Africa. While the organization has hosted numerous independent festivals at its flagship venue, Madsoc Theatre, Mwezi arts lacked a structured vision for its own festival.
According to the festival team, “TRC will mainly be a pivot vehicle to refresh our audience from the usual season schedule, to climax Madsoc events attracting a new audience, offering them productions from nations beyond their borders, language or cultural experience. TRC is a platform that will encourage and provide a grassroots support vehicle for collaborative initiatives between participating theatre companies.”

Inspired by concerns from theatre practitioners about limited support beyond festivals, TRC aims to bridge the gap between Malawian artists and the global theatre community. By connecting local enthusiasts with international productions, the festival seeks to foster cultural and artistic growth while elevating Malawi’s presence on the world stage.
Unlike traditional festivals with rigid themes, TRC embraces an open-themed format, allowing artists to present stories drawn from their personal experiences, observations, and creative imaginations. While the selection process will prioritize relevance and engagement with contemporary audiences, the festival also promises to provide a space for diverse narratives to unfold organically. Attendees can expect a rich blend of independent messages, thematic productions, and experimental performances, ensuring a dynamic and thought-provoking program.

A major highlight of TRC is its global appeal, with the festival’s open call already attracting entries from over 10 countries. The festival team shared their excitement, stating, “There has been an overwhelming response to the call, with potential to host thrilling productions from Kenya, Iran, Cameroon, Germany, Belgium, Uruguay, Israel, Tunisia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Zimbabwe complementing the Malawi groups. Sooner than expected, the festival team will start releasing the confirmed featured productions.” This international gathering promises to transform Lilongwe into a hub of global storytelling, showcasing a variety of cultures, languages, and theatrical styles to the Malawian stage.
Adding to the festival’s uniqueness is the TRC Fringe, an innovative audience outreach program that takes performances beyond traditional theatre spaces. From markets and schools to restaurants, old people’s homes, and rural villages, the Fringe will bring theatrical experiences to communities that might not otherwise engage with live performances. This initiative aims to cultivate new audiences and broaden the festival’s impact, ensuring that theatre reaches every corner of Malawian society.
