Eddungu Lya Musa: Power, Corruption, and the Price of Dreams Takes Center Stage

Eddungu Lya Musa, is a bold new production from Art Marshals Ltd, written by award-winning  writer Male Ronald Muwanguzi and directed by Yunusu Seruwooza. The play will premiere on September 5th at Kampala’s Bat Valley Theatre.

Blending drama, comedy, and political thriller elements, Eddungu Lya Musa explores how unchecked desires, whether for love, money, sex, power, or fame, can corrupt individuals and destabilise entire societies. The play paints a vivid picture of how governments and leaders relate to their citizens, while asking a central question: What does it take to create a society with true justice, accountability, and good governance?

At the heart of the story is Musa, played by director Yunusu himself, a man who tries to seize the power and influence of his former lover, Sophia, a visionary philanthropist who dreamed of creating a safe haven for Africans. But Musa’s hunger for control twists that dream into chaos.

Alongside him is Ethan (played by Sengonzi Eric), Musa’s younger brother and moral opposite, whose tragic downfall highlights the cost of greed and corruption, and Nantabaazi V. Aaliyah, who also heads the marketing team at Art Marshals, plays Hon. Treasure, a politically connected MP caught between Sophia’s vision and the realities of Musa’s flawed leadership.

Based in Mukono Ntaawo, Art Marshals Ltd has been on Uganda’s creative scene since 2015 with productions that tackle pressing social issues. Under the leadership of Male Ronald Muwanguzi, the company has delivered powerful works such as Omusubawa (on land conflicts) and Pysko (on mental health). Their Kanaluzaala recently took home top honors at the Theatre Performance Arts Festival 2024–2025.

Muwanguzi, who trained at the Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts Centre, is not only the writer but also the producer of Eddungu Lya Musa. His career spans acting, directing, screenwriting, and founding Strictly Casting. Director Yunusu Seruwooza, a graduate of Makerere University’s Drama and Film program, brings plenty of experience to the production, having directed works like Friday the 13th by Jean Pierre Martinez and assisting in Ruined by Lynn Nottage. His dual role as both director and lead actor promises a performance layered with vision and intensity.

More than just entertainment, Eddungu Lya Musa engages audiences in a reflection of their own societies, how leadership, governance, and personal ambition shape the lives of ordinary people. It is both a mirror and a cautionary tale, reminding us of the thin line between visionary leadership and destructive corruption.

As Art Marshals Ltd continues to establish itself as a bold voice in Uganda’s theatre landscape, Eddungu Lya Musa stands out as their most ambitious project yet, one that asks urgent questions while captivating audiences with powerful storytelling and stellar performances.

Tickets are now available for the September 5th performance at Bat Valley Theatre starting at 7pm. Don’t miss this chance to witness Ugandan theatre at its finest.
